18 August 2006:
The Bargate Monument Gallery, high street, southampton SO14 1HF
‘Prophecy’ 11th August – 06th October 2006
This is the first exhibition from the arches, an ambitious studio complex, unique to the City of Southampton, aimed at developing sustainable creative industries covering a diverse range of practice, including fine art, animation, film, textiles, graphics and installations. 14 artists will be participating over two sites, the bargate monument gallery, the new home of the a space arts organisation, who manage the studio space, and arch 07 at the arches in Terminus Terrace.
Southampton’s Community Strategy identified the lack of business support, studio space and exhibition facilities in Southampton as stifling the development of the creative economy. This project was started to re-address this major issue through making use of vacant space and is supported by Southampton City Cocunil and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) whose aim is to help create a prosperous, dynamic and inspirational environment, helping harness creative potential in the City.
The range of the work on show will give the general public an insight into many aspects of the visual arts undertaken at the arches. The artists involved are equally diverse in experience from just beginning their career, to already making an impact not only locally, nationally but even internationally.
Prophecy – ‘The artist can be seen as a predictive medium, using information from visual and theoretic sources to refine and predict possible futures’. Why not come along and see for yourself, experience the future -in the present.
