Ensuring Safety at Public Events
11 September 2006:
Important advice that will help to ensure safety at public events was published today by the Home Office http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk. New guidance sets out good practice advice for organisers of carnivals, charity and small-scale sporting events and has been designed to ensure that such events are as safe as possible for the public and participants.
The Good Practice Safety Guide shows professional and amateur organisers of smaller scale events how to set up events, carry out a risk assessment, and ensure that fire and safety requirements are met. It also advises on local authority requirements, the use of stewards and when to involve the police.
The Guide is not intended to take the place of a detailed Event Safety Code issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) but to act as an easily accessible tool to help plan and produce events. The guidance has been produced in collaboration with the Department for Transport, Department of Culture, Media and Sport, UK Sport, Health and Safety Executive, Association of Chief Police Officers and the Local Government Association.
