The UK has the largest marine sector in Europe with a turnover of £37 billion each year. The sector employs more than a quarter of a million people and is highly successful in key export markets.

Within the UK, the South East has an estimated turnover worth 5bn, contributing to almost 5% of the region's gross domestic product.

The South East marine sector employs over 105,000 people, around 40% of the UK workforce, many of them highly skilled.

The sector is dominated by small firms, with 95% of marine companies in the region being SMEs and 50% with 5 or less employees. There are a small number of large firms which dominate the sector in employment terms, these are concentrated in sub-sectors like shipbuilding, oil and gas, defence and leisure marine.
