The Mall Marlands in Southampton launches a £2.5 million refurbishment project

4 September 2006:

Work has begun to transform The Mall Marlands in a £2.5 million refurbishment project.

The work, which involves a major overhaul of the Manchester Street entrance of The Mall, is due for completion in November, in time for the busy Christmas shopping period.

The improvements are part of The Mall’s drive to enhance and improve the shopping centre and its prominence onto Above Bar.

The new scheme, which will involve the unveiling of an impressive new façade featuring bright, new signage, will boast a unique, innovative roof design utilising a recently developed technology used on world cup stadiums in Japan and Germany.

A new food and beverage area is a key part of the work and will be reached by means of a new escalator positioned just inside the new entrance. In addition, the development will also include new toilet facilities.

Jerry Stampfer, General Manager of The Mall Marlands, said: “This is a very exciting time for Southampton. We have a long term commitment to the city and are very pleased to see the first phase of our plans for enhancing and expanding the retail facilities at The Mall Marlands coming to fruition.

“On the back of securing the likes of Starbucks and Fopp Records, we believe the improvement works will enhance the environment and facilities within The Mall Marlands. We are working hard to minimise disruption during the work and we look forward to unveiling our new-look Mall in time for Christmas.”

Developers Dean & Bowes are implementing the refurbishment work, which gained planning permission earlier this year.
