A New Landmark Building - Southampton City Gateway

*4 July 2011

A planning application submitted by Bouygues Development to build student accommodation on a run-down site in the Swaythling area of Southampton was approved by the local council last month.

Southampton City Gateway is a 15-storey landmark tower that will provide 360 student beds. The development covers one third of a hectare and incorporates a wing on either side of the tower which will accommodate the relocated Stoneham Lane Medical Centre and Lloyds Pharmacy, a Co-Op convenience store and two further commercial units.

The inclusion of Parkville Road within the scheme provides the capacity for 44 formal car parking spaces and contributes towards the area becoming a ‘home zone’ to the benefit of local residents. In addition to improved car parking there will be secure bicycle places for students and additional cycle spaces for visitors and employees.

The existing site encompasses a youth centre which houses the Inner City Boxing Club. Bouygues Development is committed to providing replacement facilities for the boxing club through relocation, in partnership with the local council.

As well as generating approximately 125 jobs during the construction phase an estimated 30 to 40 full time jobs will be created once the complex is up and running.

Stephane Slama-Royer, Managing Director of Bouygues Development said:

“Bouygues Development is proud to have successfully reached this stage of advancement of The Southampton City Gateway project; we are overjoyed to be delivering this scheme. The development of the scheme – with its distinctive tower concept and the job opportunities that will ultimately be generated – is set to enhance the district both for university students and the wider community”.

Councillor Royston Smith, Leader of Southampton City Council said:

“This investment from Bouygues Development will bring 165 vital jobs to Southampton and shows how Southampton continues to attract well renowned companies to invest in the city.

“The site in Swaythling is in vital need of revitalisation and I am pleased planning permission has been granted, so that they can move forward with building this site”.

Bouygues Development is planning to start works on site towards the end of 2011 with a view to all units being open and operational in September 2013.
