The planning application for the redevelopment of the former Tyrrell & Green building in Southampton has been submitted by City Lofts (Southampton) Ltd.

Leading urban developer City Lofts Group PLC purchased the prominent site from Southampton City Council for £7.25 million earlier in 2007. The site, situated between Above Bar Street and Andrew’s Park in the heart of Southampton, forms part of the city council’s master plan for the regeneration of Northern Above Bar and creation of a cultural quarter.

Plans include redevelopment of the site to provide iconic and landmark buildings, including a new Arts Complex on their ground and first floors, which will be ready for fitting out as a new visual and performance arts complex by the city council and four arts partners, with grant assistance from the Arts Council England and others.

The planning application includes demolition of the existing building and erection of new buildings ranging in height from 9-storeys to 18-storeys to provide:

• a new arts facilities (54,000 sq ft of art space)
• a new commercial unit (Class A1/A3)
• 282 flats (46 studios, 106 x 1 bedroom, 126 x 2 bedroom and 4 x 3 bedroom flats) with associated parking
• formation of a new street between Guildhall Square and East/Andrews Park
