Oxford Street – Proposed Improvement Scheme

*1 July 2011

Southampton City Council is now working in partnership with Balfour Beatty to deliver a high quality improvement scheme in the Oxford Street area.

Oxford Street is one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan areas of the city, with a thriving day and night time economy. It is also an area of significant historical and architectural importance, a factor which lends the street its unique sense of identity.

It is proposed the footways at the eastern end between Terminus Terrace and Latimer Street are widened and their finished level matched with the road, creating a more pedestrian friendly environment, whilst offering enhanced al-fresco dining possibilities for cafes, bars and restaurants. The remaining footways between Latimer Street and Bernard Street are to be repaved. Improvements are also proposed at the junction of Oxford Street and Bernard Street.

Parking restrictions will apply between Terminus Terrace and Latimer Street, only allowing loading and unloading within the zone area. The on street parking bays will be re-located to John Street in the form of echelon parking bays, resulting in a net loss of around seven parking bays within the area. A Traffic Regulation Order will be advertised to make these changes.

Subject to all the necessary approvals being in place, the proposed works are due to commence in the first weeks of October soon after the Boat Show. There will be a break over the Christmas Period and for the centenary of the Titanic in April next year.
