Mayflower Gantry affordable homes opening to the public

*23 June 2011

Southampton’s newest affordable homes are nearing completion – with a show apartment opening to the public from 15 July 2011.

To mark the occasion, VIPs from First Wessex and Southampton City Council today gathered to officially open the show apartment at Empire View.

Councillor Royston Smith, Leader of Southampton City Council said: “I’m glad a show home is now ready for the public to view and see what new affordable homes are on offer in the city.

“The Gantry is part of the Southampton’s Renaissance Vision to create an environmentally sustainable city centre, to provide strong and distinctive neighbourhoods and good places where people will want to live and work.

“It is part of our overarching plan to bring more jobs and homes to the city and support growth in Southampton as a regional centre within a prosperous South Hampshire.

“This is an important step in providing more quality affordable homes for the hardworking residents of our city, who I am sure look forward to the flats completing in April 2012.“

Work is progressing rapidly on the second phase of building at the Mayflower Gantry development, which will see 115 new homes built for First Wessex. The new apartments will be available for rent and shared ownership, helping people to get on that first rung of the housing ladder by providing a sustainable mixed tenure scheme with homes for those working but on low incomes.

Hazel Warwick, Development Director at First Wessex said: “We are proud to be delivering this exciting City Centre project which will be providing high quality apartments, many with breathtaking views across the City, to Southampton Water and beyond. With this landmark scheme First Wessex are able to demonstrate our continued commitment to providing high quality sustainable homes which contribute to Southampton’s Renaissance Vision.”

The project, funded by the Homes and Communities Agency and First Wessex, constructed by Drew Smith Ltd on behalf of First Wessex and designed by Kenn Scaddan Associates, is very visually appealing; the plan is for three distinct blocks each with their own entrances and varying skyline profiles. Areas of greenery and soft landscaping will also be introduced in what is otherwise a concrete urban environment.

The design of the development was produced following a full public consultation.

For the shared ownership and intermediate rental properties applications will be processed by First Wessex, prioritised and allocated initially to applicants who are registered on Homes in Hants. All of the apartments are affordable tenures.
