Age Structure

Southampton is one of the largest city in the South East Region outside London. It is a cosmopolitan city that is home to 229,100 people speaking over 40 languages. The city's population amounts to approximately 0.4% of the UK population; 2.9% of the South East and 13.6% of the Hampshire area.

Of the 229,100 people living in Southampton, there are generally more men than women but in the 'older people' group women outnumber men by 9,100. However, this is due, in part, to the working age of men being 16-64 whereas for women it is 16-59.

Around 2/3 of Southampton's residents are of working age, the rate of 69.1% is higher than the South East region's rate of 62.6% and the national rate of 60.5%.
