Industrial & occupational structure - employment

Southampton's economy and labour market which was once dominated by the manufacturing sector, particularly port-related activities is now developing and changing.

Industries such as leisure and tourism, retail and finance, banking and insurance services are contributing to creating a more diverse local economy that provides employment for around 120,000 people. The majority of these are employed in more than 7,000 local businesses and public sector organisations.

Increasingly, Southampton is seeing a growth in enterpreneurship with currently more than 10,000 individuals setting up their own business.
